I painted Apostle Paul by putting the red bolus underneath the whole icon panel and leaving it on the outercoat (himation) as it is and only putting clothe highlights on.
The same technique on the Lamenting Virgin (Kärsimyksen Jumalanäiti)
The model is from an byzantine icon from the end of the thirteenth century, now in the Russian Tretjakov gallery in Moscow.
